GENERATIONAL SHIFT<\/strong><\/span><\/h1>\n

The More Things Change\u2026
\nA Generational Perspective about Moral Choice<\/em><\/span><\/h4>\n

January 2020<\/p>\n

I was at a loss about what to write for this month\u2019s article.\u00a0 I considered all that\u2019s going on right now, including this special time of year.\u00a0 I believe the widespread dysfunction, hostility, and anger needed addressing\u2026 especially because of the time of year.\u00a0 I wanted to write something that would be helpful\u2026 that would create hope.\u00a0 I pondered\u2026 and nothing surfaced.<\/p>\n

So, I looked through old articles and interviews that I\u2019d done\u2026 to see if anything struck a chord\u2026 and I saw an article about a talk I gave to a Rotary Club in Vallejo California on January 4th, 2001.\u00a0 What immediately struck me was how little had changed\u2026 like the adage, \u201cthe more things change, the more they stay the same.\u201d<\/p>\n

THEN\u2026 I was addressing a multi-generational audience\u2026 of diverse backgrounds\u2026 all trying to make their community better\u2026 all rushing around trying to accomplish more than is possible each day\u2026 sound familiar?<\/p>\n

Generational Shift<\/span><\/h2>\n

The difference was that \u2014in 2001\u2014 we Babyboomers were the middle generation.\u00a0 We were at our operational peak… frenetically doing\u2026 going way to fast to notice that our world was quietly crumbling around us.\u00a0 And because it wasn\u2019t distracting enough to be seen\u2026 we didn\u2019t notice\u2026 our eyes were elsewhere.\u00a0 (There was lots of glitter and distraction then too.)<\/em><\/p>\n

As I read the reporter\u2019s synopsis of my talk\u2026 I was struck that what was happening then is still happening\u2026 actually, even more\u2026the only difference is that now we\u2019ve graduated to the senior generation\u2026 so now there are two generations behind us\u2026 who appear to be more bewildered than we were at their age.<\/p>\n

TODAY\u2026 I hope my message resonates with all of our current generations\u2026 because even though we all see things through our own filters and experiences\u2026 it\u2019s important to see that it affects us all\u2026 and that indeed, not much has changed, especially around this time of the year\u2026 a time when Faith and Hope collide with our most intense materialistic bingeing.<\/p>\n

Holiday Materialism\u2026<\/span><\/h2>\n

Has made huge advances since 2001\u2026 thanks to huge advances in technology.\u00a0 Our current \u201cinstant gratification on steroids\u201d society only adds to the intensity that we call daily life\u2026 then add in holidays.<\/p>\n
